Or any of the vendors making money hand over fist selling Linux products. I for one use Linux, not because it's free, but because it fucking kicks ass. The IP stack is among the fastest out there. It is rock solid. exec() times are demonstrably faster than under any other unix, and blow bloated beasts like Solaris out of the water. Full posix thread support, SMP support, Appletalk/ Novell/SMB support, ipv6/ipsec/kerberos/dnssec/multicast, it runs on the x86, AXP, SPARC, PPC, m68k, (strong)ARM, etc. To say that people only use free unices only because they're free shows a remarkable ignorance concerning the present state of operating system technologies. People often use free unices because they outperform and are more stable than commercial unices on the same hardware. I can't believe that anyone (especially an ex-Informix engineer) could think that in this day and age. > Also, how many developers that are > developing on Linux and that want Informix are going to put their > product out for the same minimal profit percentage that they expect > Informix to take? Who said that Informix had to take lower margins under Linux than anywhere else? People have suggested that they _could_ do so in order to reach ubiquity, but it's by no means a requirement for a Linux port. > So lighten up and find some free database software to go with Linux. In the absence of a Linux port, the rising generation of unix people will (continue to) do exactly this. > When you decide to do some SERIOUS development, then maybe you will > spend the money for some serious software. sigh. -- Todd Graham Lewis Linux!
