DATAWAREHOUSE DISK SETUP
Posted in 1998
We are currently setting up an HP-UX box with the following configuration: HP-UX 10.20 20 Disks each of 8.8 GB with 2 controllers 1,048 GB RAM 4 CPUs 200MHZ This machine is to be used PRIMARILY for a datawarehouse database. The database is currently below 10 MB, We are expecting it to grow to 50 GB in the near feature and will be that size for at least 2 to 3 years. The database will have about 20 tables of which 3 to 5 will be very large (4 million records or larger) We have planned to setup the system as: 1. We will use all raw disk spaces 2. Possible setup: RAID 1 rootdbs 200,000 MB Physical logs 50,000 MB Logical Logs 50,000 MB RAID 5 With Striping dbspace1 6 chunks each of 2GB ---> 12 GB dbspace2 6 chunks each of 2GB ----> 12 GB dbspace3 6 chunks each of 2GB ------> 12 GB NO RAID tempdbs1 1 chunk of 1GB tempdbs2 1 chunk of 1 GB Can any one advise me, if there are articles or information about disk layout strategy for an OLAP system using RAID 5 with striping. - If create a logical volumes and use RAID 5 with striping accross 10 disks that use two controllers. Then the dbspaces will be laydown on the logical volumes. Will this replace the need to fragment large tables over varous dbspaces? - Do horizontal fragmentation strategies and RAID mix? - Should we setup an index dbspace for indices of large tables? Separate indices of large tables which are being joined together in different dbspaces? But my question, again, is will I gain any performance if dbspaces are on "top" of raid 5 with stripping? -- Should we use RAID5 for root and logical and physical logs instead of raid 1 -- If we use RAID5 with striping how can the DBA contol the location of the tables in order to place high-accessed tables together with low-accessed tables? -- Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated Thank you in advance Beatrice Rocha-Restrepo beatrice.rocha@worldnet.att.net
