Index Performance

We are noticing some very severe performance degradation in an application that is using float fields as keys. We are running SE5 on an NCR 3450 dual pentium box with Unix SVr4. The big change to this application has been implementation of referential integrety and the floating keys. Is there a noticable difference between integer keys and floating keys? I'm not an Inforix wiz or even a real neophyte. I know just enough to get by but I'm trying to help our vendor work out these performance issues. Any help or suggestions would be appriceated.
