We are at the other extreme, restarting ONLINE (7.2) daily.
Our reasons :
1. We bring down UNIX daily to clear up phantom processes.
2. On a round-robin basis, we carry out the following daily
a) re-indexing
b) Update Statistics
c) Export of databases
This occurs between midnight and about 5 am. For these
processes we restart (with a different ONCONFIG) to allow
a) logging to be stopped for all databases
b) DS parameters to be changed suitably.
c) 'stale' users to be kicked out (to allow dbexport to work)
As for your question - ONLINE is a 24 x 7 server. One can accomplish
all our tasks while keeping up OL (we just happen to have this
midnight - 5 am window).
There is no documented reason to bring down ONLINE on a periodic
basis. (but, don't you want to tinker around :-) ?)
Run onmode -F once in a while.
