Deployment of large client/server (pref NewEra) application
Posted in 1996
We are going to deploy a NewEra client/server application and would like some feedback about deployment/run-time issues on client/server systems. We are currently approaching the end of development and will go into System/Stress testing soon. The application consists of about 80 windows(wifs), approx 200,000 lines of code in about 400 files. The database consists of 120 tables and will be approx 6GB. We have gone for the single exe approach which is approx 4MB in size. This will be used by 350 users (250 very active, 50 active, and 50 occasional) connected to a single Sequent running Online 7.1. The 350 PCs will be managed by 5 NT servers running SMS. What do we need to look out for? Some of our concerns are: - Can the Sequent handle 350 PCs? How many ethernet boards should it have? We have been told that the main board can handle 12,000 pkts/sec and subsequent boards can handle 2000 pkts/sec. - Can SMS manage that many PCs effectively? - Can a NewEra app run continuously for 12 hours on a PC? In general, we are very impressed with NewEra. The language is excellent, but the tools are not yet well integrated. We are looking forward to V3. David W Chan dwc@cix.compulink.co.uk
