DiskSuite vs Informix - Mirroring

Hello All, I am moving a db-engine from a SCO box running Online 5.0 to Solaris 2.6 on a Sun E3500 w/Informix IDS 7.3. The E3500 has 6 9gig FC-AL internal drives, 3 per controller. I am using DiskSuite 4.1 to mirror the sytem disk. Should I perhaps use DiskSuite to do mirroring for Informix raw device's? I am leaning torwards using Informix, anyone have some thoughts? I am most interested in performance, and then reliabilty, fast-recovery. I think both can do parallel read/writes? Thanks for your time. Olaf rico@wsex.com

I favor hardware/firmware mirroring to any software mirror as it always benchmarks as much faster. However, Informix mirror -vs- Disksuite mirror is almost a wash with Disksuite probably SLIGHTLY faster. The decision should probably depend on who has to administer each, which is easier for you as DBA. For example if a Sysadmin, not you, has to get involved to replace a drive then when the drive goes at 3AM on the morning of July 5th and the sysadmin is out of town until 8AM what do you do as DBA when they call you? Or, rather, can you say "HEY they are less likely to need me over that holiday since the Sysadmin can take care of it!" It kind of depends on your attitude. Art S. Kagel

There's a lovely gotcha if you forget to make a note of the real devices:-) Cos you are not using the storage arrays then I'd go for Informix mirroring of the databases. But as with many things it depends on exactly what you are doing with your DB. Paul Watson # I don't suffer from WF Software Ltd. # stress, I'm just Tel. (+44) 1436 674729 # a carrier Fax.
