CGI interfacing in Informix?

Has anyone successfully used the Informix-ESQL/C CGI inteface (or isqlperl) to develop programs to connect to a database not on the same machine as the web server? In other words, I have one SUN Sparc machine running NCSA's 1.5.1 web server, no database or database tools with an NFS mounted cgi-bin directory on another SUN which contains the Informix database (Online 7.1). Whenever I develop an isqlperl or ESQL/C CGI script, I receive the error "-461: File Open Error" and am unsure how to get around it. Which brings up another question, does the web server, database, and cgi-bin directories need to reside on the same machine? Or is it preferred to have the web server and cgi-bin directories on the same machine and the database on another?
