I get the same error on SCO_SV, informix 7.30. (using dirty read)
Just to add to the weirdness, this works:
select partnum from systabnames order by 1
but this gives the error:
select partnum from systabnames order by 1 desc
Suppose it has anything to do with systabnames being an SMI pseudo-table?
(BTW, the manual says that, since the SMI tables are created dynamically
from shared memory, the isolation level is irrelevant, being essentially
permanently dirty read)
