If, from isql, you were to unload the table (ex. output to file.dat select * from table;) you would probably get a dumb message like "data to small to fit into an int" or maybe even something more meaningful. I ended up writing a program to look for bad data, and update those columns with 0's. I believe in one case, the bad data got there by way of an unitialized structure written to the table. The other way to end up with this mess is to run out of locks (pre 5.0) and have it munge your partition.
