For Informix Online purposes, it's crippled, IMO, by its use of the dbAnywhere server. As best I can tell, if you're going to use their data-aware controls, you have to use a dbAnywhere server. It's certainly true that their database project wizards all use dbAnywhere-based controls. You could, of course, use JDBC and not use their dbAnywhere controls, but in that case you might as well stick with plain Visual Cafe. We're using HPUX 10.01 and Informix 7.14, and functionally, as long as you have the latest patches, it does seems to work fine. The first version was extremely buggy. There may also be the problem that you only get a 5-user license with Visual Cafe Pro (except for Microsoft Access and Sybase SQL Anywhere); if you expect to have more than five people accessing the database, you have to buy additional dbAnywhere licenses. I do, however, have to add the caveat that the manual I'm looking at was produced before they added native Informix support; the Informix deal may allow for unlimited connections. My comments only concern Visual Cafe Pro; Symantec has just released a new product line consisting of Visual Cafe 2.0 for Java (Web development edition, Professional development edition, and Database development edition.) The database development edition is the closest equivalent to VC Pro, but I haven't seen it yet. The literature for the database development edition says there's a 25-connection limit, which is certainly more useful than the limits in VC Pro. -- William Harris william@carsinfo.com Check out the NAGS spam filter. http://www.nags.org
