Looking for uppercase() function

Does anyone know of an SQL function to turn characters to uppercase?
I have a bunch of names in a field that have been entered by the users
themselves, so there's a mixture of upper and lower case. Well now I
want to query on this field, and can't reliably get the records I want
because of the mixture of upper and lower case. For instance:
FULLNAME ADDRESS
---------------------------------
John Smith 123 anywhere St
JANE SMITH 456 nowwhere dr
peter smith 789 here ct
My query would look something like this:
select FULLNAME, ADDRESS from CUSTOMERS
where upper(FULLNAME) matches '*SMITH*'
but I can find no function like 'upper()'.
Or is there a better way to do this? I posted this to the Informix
newsgroup because my database is Informix, and I couldn't find a
generic
SQL newsgroup. If there's a more appropriate place, let me know.
Thanks in advance,
Pat
