Yes the alter statement does work, but what it actually does is add a
serial, indexed column to your table schema. This allowes applications which
use ROWID to continue to work unmodified. However this is essentially the
same as using a primary key for access, so why not use primary key, and
eliminate the overhead of an additional indexed integer type column?? (I
understand, that a unique primary key may not be included in every table, so
adding the ROWID column or some other unque column, would be necessary.
