Greetings I am less than a newbie in informix but not one in Oracle. Is there a place I can read about the informix structures vis a vis Oracle(sga, tablespace, datafiles etc) I know there are good manuals out there or there could be. Please bear with me do not be quick to direct me to the Informix manuals because that may not be what I need. I will appreciate your help Vince
Unix Backup and Recovery book from O'reilly might be a good start. Once you get over the shock that a schema is actually an sql file with all commands to create database objects and the database (Informix) is more less what Oracle calls schema, plus Oracle equiv of database is really an instance everything else is quite logical. From the developer perspective it is much harder to find differences and I find them usually when a statement which run in Informix for many years cannot run on Oracle because of its limitations. Here are a few of the differences (or similarities, depending on how you look at it): Informix Oracle Raw disk space File system Logical logs Redo logs Physical log Rollback segment dbspace, dbslice tablespace shared memory sga (no correlation, OS auth) password file

Oracle 9i no longer uses rollback segments by default and Oracle has announced their elimination in future versions, 10i being due out in a matter of months. But, while I'd never feel comfortable putting a percentage on it you are roughly correct, the products are similar but with different architectures. -- Daniel Morgan http://www.outreach.washington.edu/extinfo/certprog/oad/oad_crs.asp damorgan@x.washington.edu (replace 'x' with a 'u' to reply)
