Informix application interfaces info

Hi, I was looking through the Informix manuals looking for info on APIs to access the database. The only interface seemed to be embedded SQL. Can applications directly call the Informix procedures such as _iqdcl, _iqcftch, ... Are these procedures documented and officially supported? There use to be a low level application interface available that did not go through use SQL (some C-ISAM library). I have been told that it is not available for Online 6.0. Is there an equivalent?
