I've always been told that RAW device provides better performance for database activities, but that was many moons ago; Is this still true? Are their any disadvantages, or anything I should lookout for when upgrading? CURRENT NEW RS/6000 J50 (32-bit) RS600 pSeries 615 Model 6C3 (64-bit) AIX 5.1 AIX 5.2 IDS 7.31 UD8 IDS 7.31FD8 or IDS 9.4 RAW JFS2 Thanks

Don't let the OS dorks tell you otherwise. -- Bye now, Obnoxio "C'est pas parce qu'on n'a rien à dire qu'il faut fermer sa gueule" - Coluche "I'm trying to see things your way, but I can't get my head up my ass" - JCH "Ogni uomo mi guarda come se fossi una testa di cazzo" - Marco I went to the airport to check in and they asked what I did because I looked like a terrorist. Many moons ago and still true. Raw devices means the database gets to handle it's own I/O - as opposed to going through the file system and paying a 15% penalty. Disadvantage is that it is marginally harder to set up, but that's fairly well documented. cheers j. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Meza, Silvana" <smeza@fheg.follett.com> To: <ids@iiug.org> Sent: Monday, November 22, 2004 3:48 PM Subject: JFS2 VS RAW [3753] > > > I've always been told that RAW device provides better performance for > database activities, but that was many moons ago; > Is this still true? > > Are their any disadvantages, or anything I should lookout for when > upgrading? > > > > > CURRENT > NEW > > RS/6000 J50 (32-bit) > RS600 pSeries 615 Model 6C3 (64-bit) > > AIX 5.1 > AIX 5.2 > > IDS 7.31 UD8 > IDS 7.31FD8 or IDS 9.4 > > RAW > JFS2 > > > > > Thanks > > >
