How to recover
Posted in 2008
A test IDS 11.5 instance on Windows XP broke after the poster renamed a chunk file (ol_svr_custom_dat.002) instead of dropping it with onspaces -d. The engine then reported 'Bad Primary Chunk' and, once online, errors 311/155 (cannot open systables, primary and mirror chunks bad). Renaming the file back, creating a Windows hard link (fsutil), and checking ROOTPATH didn't help. Another poster explained that with ONDBSPACEDOWN=0 (continue) the chunk is marked down at startup and can only be recovered via a restore or IBM support; ONDBSPACEDOWN=1 (abort) would have let him replace the file and retry. No in-place fix was found, and the poster simply restored from backup on this test system.

Hi everyone...
Some help would be helpfull:
I was trying different sizes for a chunk and was creating it and then
deleting it (with diffferent sizes).
In an unknow turn of events I didn't drop a chunk properly (onspaces -d ...)
, instead I renamed the chunk from "chunk_name" to "__chunkname" and swith
off the engine.
Now when I bring up the instance (oninit -v) I get this message:
Opening primary chunks...Bad Primary Chunk
'D:\\\\IFMXDATA\\\\ol_svr_custom\\\\ol_svr_custom_dat.002'.
because I renamed ol_svr_custom_dat.002 to __ol_svr_custom_dat.002
All in all the database goes on-line but when I try to do something I get
this:
311: Cannot open system catalog (systables).
155: ISAM error: Primary and Mirror chunks are bad
Then i renamed the chunk back to its original name ol_svr_custom_dat.002
And tryed to start the instance but same error still appear...
So what can I do? Any help/hint would be very appreciated.
Thanks in advance
J.
BTW this is a test : Window XP-SP2 IDS 11.5 TC1
Try creating a link so that both names exist.

This seems really hard !! and well I have backups ;)
So... don't mess with chunk names... :: lesson learnt.

My take is that you could not fix it because you had
ONDBSPACEDOWN set to 0 (continue). Had you had it set it to 1 (Abort),
the instance will error out and give you the chance to put the chunk
back in place and try again. When it is set to continue, it is marked
down and the only way to recover it is thru a restore or a call to
Technical support.
I had several occasions when for any reason a chunk was not available
and I was able to start the engine fine after the issue with the chunk
was resolved.
