If they are (or the one with 4GL > and the one with the users are) why can't you compile the 4GL on the one > machine and put the executable on the other. I realize this is a mute point > if the machines are not the same. > > DAS > -- Dave, Our machines are identical. They are Unisys 5000/80's. They have the same versions of the operating system, and as far as I know, they are binary compatible (whatever that means *exactly*). I didn't bother trying this earlier, since I was told in a training class that Informix has some mechanism in their software that detects if you are trying to run copies of programs that came from different machines (with different serial numbers). I never tried this before, so I gave it a try today. I transferred the executable (.4ge) from the one machine to the other. I created the database (.dbs subdirectory) and made the table and transferred the compiled screen form (.frm). Perhaps the problem I encountered was due to the fact that I created the .dbs and the table using SQL version 2.10 and not version 4.00. Here's what happened: when I tried to run the .4ge program, I got this error message displayed and my prompt returned: "Please install an INFORMIX-4GL Run Time Facility and run this program again." So your suggestion sounded real promising, but it won't work. We have a copy of 4GL on order for our other machine. With government procurement, we may have it by next Christmas. In the meantime our users will endure the limitations of Perform.
