Programming C and INFORMIX

I begin with INFORMIX V4 (ok it(s old release but i have nothing release). Somebody can explain me the bases to interface INFORMIX database with a C programm. I have use the command 'EXEC SQL' et '$' but nothing. My release is too old for that. How i can make that. Thank
