However, if your set-up is such that users can change the environment before running the application, you can't count on the value of LOGNAME. Since our applications can be invoked from the shell, we need to get the login-ID in a way where the end-user can't change the value. Also, we do a setreuid() as part of application start-up, so even an unchanged LOGNAME probably wouldn't be what we want.
