If your FORTRAN and "C" compilers are interoperable, and most are, you can always write the ESQL in C and call these from FORTRAN. This way once the calling library is complete the move to "C" should be painless since the database function library will already be there. This is what we have done here for many things. Another approach is to write middleware in "C" making all database accesses and translating to a proprietary query/transport protocol. This method we have also used and again there will be a protocol and data service available both to FORTRAN and "C" applications. The specifics of the FORTRAN/C calling conventions will vary from compiler to compiler but there are two basic versions and both are easy to code for. You can write C callable FORTRAN and FORTRAN callable C modules as well as writing pure C functions and FORTRAN callable "wrapper" functions (and vice-versa) so that C and FORTRAN clients can have more similar argument lists.
