I need to get a clarification on the Dynamic Logical
LOgs in IDS 9.4. We having few sites running in IDS 9.4 FC6 on IBM pSeries AIX
5.3
Below are the parameter values which have been set :-
# Logical Log Configurationd
LOGFILES 6 # Number of logical log files
LOGSIZE 2000 # Logical log size (Kbytes)
DYNAMIC_LOGS 2
LTXHWM 70
LTXEHWM 80
CDR_MAX_DYNAMIC_LOGS -1
Q1. Was that the only parameters which need to set to enable the Dynamic
Logical Logs ?.
Q2. IF we did dbimport of the database with specify the logging/buffered, does
the logical logs are automaticllay being backup and increased ?.
Q3. I have created the logdbs dbspace to store the logicals logs. With dynamic
increased the number of logs, can the logs be automatically stored in logdbs
rather then in rootdbs?
Q4. Was there a constraint in IDS 9.4 whereby the tape device during the
ontape -s -B or -L to change the logging can not be set to /dev/null?.
Hope somebody can advice on this .
Thanks and Regards
Hi,
Q1: Yes, I think this will do.
Q2: It will automatically add logical log files as needed.
However, it will not automatically backup logical logs
as they get full. For that you need to either configure
ON-Bar accordingly via the onconfig parameter
ALARMPROGRAM (.../log_full.sh script), or you need
to use ontape -c (for continuous log backup) or
periodically do ontape -a (for manual log backup).
Q3: I think this is what will happen, but I'm not 100% sure.
Better try to be sure.
Q4: Do you mean TAPEDEV or LTAPEDEV set to /dev/null ?
Usually it is only LTAPEDEV that one sets to /dev/null to
avoid real log backup (though this is not generally
recommended).
When doing database logging change, there is no real archive done
as far as I know. So for that command it is not necessary to
change TAPEDEV.
To do a normal archive ("-L" option) with TAPEDEV set
to /dev/null ... I'm not sure how that is useful.
If you think you need to do that, then make sure afterwards you
do a real level-0 archive before doing any level-1 or -2
archives. Otherwise the latter archives will be utterly useless.

Martin
