Hello Julien,
I had another database-portation (HP Eloquence/SQL)
from an HP9000/817 with 192MB under HPUX-10.20
to a Linux-Box (2x PII-300 with 384MB, SuSE6.1).
The performance on the Linux is with this Database about
10-20 times faster than the old HP.
(we have about 15-20 users running an ERP-System on the Linux).
The linux works also as Samba-File/Print-Server for 20 NT-Clients and
as an Intranet-Webserver (Apache+PHP).
The HP9000 has a very slow SCSI and the network is only 10Mbit, while
the Linux has LVD-SCSI and 100Mbit-network, so the archictecture of
your machine will help the linux-box to look good.
I think that linux will do good for smaller business-applications like
about 10-30 users.
If it is getting up to more users, a SMP HPUX (eg. K-Class) will be
the better idea (IMHO) - also the costs don't matter to much for larger companys.
More than 2 processors dont't make sense on linux by now.
A good linux-maschine eg. HP Netserver costs about $5.000
an the uptime is no problem.
We also have an Informix Dynamic-Server running on a linux-machine,
but with this we are just at the beginning... (so far it looks good)
- we dont use 4GL, but E/SQL -
Hope this helps,
Martin Gutjahr
