To answer you first question. Yes, the term MACH 11 was the code name for RSS/SDS functionality. ----- Original Message ---- From: Andrew Ford <aford@networkip.net> To: informix-list@iiug.org Sent: Monday, May 21, 2007 2:53:44 PM Subject: MACH 11 Is MACH 11 (http://www.physorg.com/news98803681.html) simply internal jargon for RSS nodes or SDS nodes running in a blade center consisting of 1 read/write primary and multiple read only secondaries or is this something completely different? The ability to create a database engine cluster via the new RSS/SDS functionality is very interesting. What is even more interesting is creating synonyms that point to the writeable tables on the primary node and performing your data insert/update/deletes against these synonyms. If the client is written in such a way that it reads from the real table names and writes to the synonyms you can connect to any random node in the cluster and have a nice load balancing solution that can scale easily. I would imagine that this isn't too great for systems that need to do a lot of writing of data but it would be great for applications that do a lot of reads up front and then a small write at the end of the session (online catalogs). One thing that would make this clustering a little bit more robust would be the ability to create the synonym against a group that contains all of the RSS nodes. In theory the engine would handle the logic of determining which node is the primary much like you can contain your HDR Primary and Secondary in a group, connect to this group and be automatically routed to the primary. Currently I get a -559 error, Cannot create a synonym on top of another synonym, when attempting this. Would it be possible to eliminate the need for the synonym/application changes and have the secondary nodes automatically route the insert/update/deletes to the primary node behind the scenes?
