RE: Eclipse Data Tools Project

There's a couple of farmers' expressions that I could say, but it would be too easy to pick on the French. Or even more politiicaly incorrect stuff. >This will be certainly fun. > >The Eclipse Data Tools project is NOT an IBM-based project and Zachi is >dealing with the group already... > Sigh. Typical French. They require a history lesson. IBM "donated" the code to create the "eclipse project". Its interesting that IBM chose to use Eclipse's licensing, as well as Apaches and not GPL(s) licensing. ;-) (There's really a lot more to this but it goes in to IP management issues.) IBM still has several resources engaged in Eclipse Development and does have a vested interest in seeing Eclipse succeed. Since IBM also has DB2, IDS and Cloudscape, it has a vested interest in seeing a tool support all three databases. (Note too that IBM does sell Cloudscape/Derby support and does have staff dedicated to the project). >I think it's worth fighting for it, as you said it, it's just about finding >the URL in millions of lines of code ;-). That's what's great about OS... > >jgp Well no, actually it goes beyond that. Yes, you can create a JDBC connection to a database by setting up a method to allow the user to create the URL and the variable lists that the URL requires. (Several OSPs do this. (Open Source Projects)) What is missing is support for the extensions found in Informix. Now, I'd love to see an Open Sourced tool, to allow you to work with the Informix DB from within Eclipse (One tool for *all* development), however, I think IBM calls this Rational Data Architect. ;-) _________________________________________________________________ The MSN Entertainment Guide to Golden Globes is here.
