onbar
Posted in 2009
Larry needed to add logical logs to an XPS 8.21 data warehouse and wanted a throwaway (/dev/null) level-0 backup, but found no ontape or onparams on the system. Replies explained that XPS differs from IDS: ontape doesn't exist there, and space/log administration is done via onutil. For the dummy archive, suggestions were onbar -b -L 0 -F (fake backup) and, from IBM's John Miller, 'echo "ALTER COGROUP COGROUP_ALL RESET BACKUP;" | onutil', with a link to an IBM technote. Larry then asked for beginner onbar setup guidance, which went unanswered.

I need to add some logical logs to my XPS datawarehouse. There is no ontape
and I need to do an onbar to /dev/null. I don't want to take a real backup.
Can anyone give me the instructions for this?
onbar -b -L 0 - but how do I direct this to /dev/null instead of a usualdevice?
Larry
Hi,
Maybe you can use "ontape" instead of using onbar...
set to /dev/null the ff: LTAPEDEV and TAPEDEV
do ontape -s
ontape -l
Only the storage manager that you are using for onbar will be able to do
that.
What do you mean there's not ontape? There's always an ontape! It came
with your engine installation.

I'm not sure that XPS supports this ... but in IDS,
onbar -b -L 0 -F
Will perform a fake backup ...

I searched through the filesystems and there is no "ontape" installed.

I have done a find for both "ontape" and "onparams" on the server with my IDS

I have never seen ontape in any of our XPS environments.

Hi,
XPS and IDS are not from the same source. They are dramatically different
in many ways including the administration. It has been a few months the last
time I used XPS but the missing onspaces, onparams are done via ONUTIL.
Onutil can read files of commands to add spaces add logs remove logs or
operate in an interactive mode. The sybtax that onutil accepts is fairly
strict, I would need a manual to construct any commands.
No ontape does not exist in XPS, yes the functions that are required do
exist, but of course they behave a little differently.
I would go to the IBM web site and find the manuals (online) for the
particular XPS version you are working with and start with ONUTIL or by
searching what erver your particular problem is.
George.

OK. If I use onutil to create more logical logs, how do I do the required
archive to /dev/null to enable to the new logs to be used?

Any archive will do, it does not need to be done to /dev/null.
Use onbar (if you run onbar -? It will show the usage statement the -F does
the equivalent of ontape to /dev/null)
Look to ibm.com for the free online manuals that explain all this.
