Chinese and Korean New Years are not for months yet, the Muslim New Year (based on an almost purely lunar calendar) moves around the solar year and I can't remember when it is this 'year', and the Jewish calendar actually has three 'New Years': the calendar starts with the first month, Nisan, 14 days before Passover in the spring. Rosh Hashanah occurs in the seventh month, Tishrei (seems odd, but God created the universe and man created the calendar, so...). It is the anniversary of the creation of man on the sixth day of the creation of the universe and usually falls in September or early October on the secular calendar (or Christian calendar as you prefer). Finally there's Tu b'Shvat which is known as the New Year for trees (in temple times only a tree older than three years could contribute first fruits for Tithing, so a start date for such calculations was set). At any rate, Happy New Year 2006 everyone! May the turning of the calendar bring us all joy and peace. Especially peace! Art S. Kagel
