Bar codes

What is the cheapest type of printer for producing adequate bar codes. I know that there may be a few "depends on " phrases there. I would like to produce codes on labels on a device that takes up very little desk space. Serial communications is probably necessary as well. If there is a cheap way, what are the pitfalls.
