??? "Guide to GLS Functionality" ???

Hi, we have problems with our charset, inserting Umlauts is not possible, and the "Guide to GLS Functionality" in Online 7.20, ... well, until this morning I tought I saw (and understood) many things, but this one confuses me to an extent never experienced before, at least for accumulating the knowledge required for a quick fix. Are there better, more compact/structured documentations available?
