Using the GLINK terminal emulator under MS Windows (any version) this is the simplest thing in the world. We can map any "attribute" in Informix 4GL to any combination of background and forground colors. Grey background on form, white background on fields with dark grey characters makes for a very nice look. And may be error messages on a read background? Check out http://www.gar.no/ If you are unfortunate enough to have to use regular terminals it may be possible to tweek your termcap entry, but I can't help you on that.
