Actually, the SQL-86 and SQL-89 standards specify that a conforming
implementation does not have to support names longer than 18 characters,
but that it may do so.
SQL-92 has 3 levels. SQL-89 more or less corresponds to the entry level.
As far as I know, at the entry level, 18 character names are 'OK'. At
higher levels, the names have to be up to 128 characters long. Informix
claims compliance to entry level SQl-92 only.
