Strange select problem

I wrote a set of reports for a client and they worked fine on the sample database that I had. However, when run against the live database one of the reports gave a -408 error on a select statement. The select statement is selecting against a view which is comprised of six tables, one of which is an outer join putting the result into a temp table. When I looked at the code nothing seems to be wrong and the next report which is very similar ran ok. The difference eventually turned out to be that the select statement that was failing was not in a transaction whereas the working one was. Any ideas what would cause such a problem.
