Key mapping issues with Putty and 4GL

I am having problems with my backspace and delete keys in 4GL and
informix tools like dbaccess. I am running putty as an xterm. The
TERM env is xterm. I am looking to have the backspace be destructive
and the delete key be an Interrupt. I have tried running the
termcap_keys program form the IIUG site and using those setting to no
avail. The keys work normally in bash and vi.
I have kD=\\E[3~: In my termcap now which is what termcap_keys
suggested, nothing for backspace.
