Re: odbc

One would wish all these ODBC questions could once be cleared up, but of course new users won't know about that without reading Kerrys fine FAQ. Information from Informix isn't very clear on this issue. Informix delivers ODBC drivers for MS Windows 3.1/3.11 as part of the product called Informix CLI (Call Level Interface). (No MS Windows 95 or NT versions yet :(:(:(. Informix seems to be working on that, but as usual there is no announcements as to when it will be available. Informix CLI is also included in the package if you buy NewEra for MS Windows at least in the development version. Ask what you get with the runtime version, there are different options i think. This is ODBC version 2.0 with a good performance. Numbers that have been mentioned are 3% slower than direct connections via I-Net for MS Windows. These ODBC drivers have been developed for Informix by Visigenics. They include and use I-Net. As the name says Informix CLI also includes a call level interface. As far as I know this is the ANSI standard CLI, much or all the same as the MS ODBC call level interface. Informix CLI is also available in versions for some Unix operating systems giving you the same call level interface. This can replace ESQL/C for those who write new programs. (It doesn't if you allready have ESQL/C programs, they would have to be rewritten.) Somebody also said he had developed a similar call level interface using ESQL/C. That may be an option to save runtime fees if you allready have ESQL/C. OpenLink and VisionWare also have ODBC drivers for Informix databases (also older versions than Informix CLI support) that don't use I-Net. They communicate with a server program from the same companies that runs on the same server as your database (Unix or Windows NT) that connects to the database. From these companies you allso get MS Windows 95 and NT versions. They may be faster and have other advantages, but I haven't seen any real reports yet. Anybody have good test results? There are also other sources like Intersolve and some products have direct drivers that use Informix I-Net and don't need ODBC. As to writing your own ODBC drivers for Informix databases you might want to talk to Visigenics or Syware. They seem both to have base source code to get you started. Why anybody would want to do it i don't know (unless they want to compete with the available products of course).
