There is a faction of AS/400 types around here who want to do the same thing, but I don't think that's viable at all. In our installation, (I don't know about others) the AS/400 is down for backup for a couple of hours EVERY NIGHT. If for some reason it goes down (power, upgrade, etc) then it takes a COUPLE OF DAYS for it to come back up. Further, ours is ALWAYS operating at capacity, and thus is cripplingly slow. Ours is also a thousand miles offsite, and dependant on the communications between here and there. It takes the "programmers" who run that stuff DAYS to make even a simple code change, and it uses that awful 1950's throwback excuse for an operating system. Whew. They (the people who _really_ tried) failed miserably at an attempt to use DRDA to make the server thing work. They are now asking for my help in doing away with that and using a simple ftp upload of pertinent data. All that said, trash the AS/400 and, if you have to go with Big Blue then use the AIX machines. AS/400 is like a horse-and-buggy (really buggy) computer. It's big and fast, but still a grossly outdated dinosaur. Use UNIX. It's like a car. Even a cheap car is better than a horse. But that's what this forum is all about, isn't it?
