Bug #18326
Posted in 1993
I have just noticed a Tech Alert on Informix Link concerning a 'serious' bug with Online 5.0 and 5.01, Bug #18326, part of which states as follows: 'Select statements joining several tables where there are a large number of duplicate join values can return the incorrect number of rows. This problem occurs when the optimizer chooses a SORT MERGE operation to process the join of a select statement. If there are a significant number of duplicate join values, the operation requires the creation of a temporary table. The temporary table is updated with incorrect join rows which in turn become a product of the select statement.' This is confusing me slightly - the first sentence mentions 'incorrect number of rows', whereas the last one states 'updated with incorrect join rows'. What I would like to know is how would I recognize this problem in the field - would I receive an incorrect number of correct rows, or an incorrect/correct number of incorrect rows ? Has anyone seen this in the real world ? If so, please let me know what kind of incorrect data is received. Cheers, Richard Ridley DHL Asia Pacific
