Re: Paranoia and Secrecy SQL -932 error

The getservbyname I believe is a function that tries to get the server ip-adress from the name you have spesified for the machine where your database is located. Normally you either select dhcp support in your MS Windows TCP/IP setup or you will have to locate the HOSTS file (somwhere under your WINDOWS directory I tink) and add your server name and it's IP adress to that file. Your services file should be in the same directory, and I assume you have set up a proper service specification in that according to the instruction in the installation manual. As you connect via an internet service provider I would assume your server is behind a firewall. In that case this will not be possible (as far as I know). What you then have to do is to create a whole in the firewall on the port you have specified that Informix use (in /etc/services on Unix and in your services file on MS Windows). You may have to know the protocol used by Informix as well. When this is done I think (don't realy know, but someone should) you connect to the firewall (not to your Unix server) on that port. The firewall should then translate incoming connections on this port to whatever IP adress your Unix server have. This might work, it might not. I haven't ever tried with Informix software. You may also have created a big security whole in your firewall that may not be acceptable to anyone. Probably you have. This is all I know. May be someone else could comment further.
