Ontape will work with most any device, but it has to have the same rewind characteristics as a 'rewind' tape device. (Disk files do, for instance, but I don't know about your CD-ROM.) You can write files up to the o/s filesize limitation. On most versions of unix that is 2GB, and 4GB on a few. You can see examples of shell scripts and other programs to do archives to disk on the IIUG site at http://www.iiug.org . >What about DVD? I'd guess it is the same, but I don't really know. >We may, in the near future, upgrade to OL 7.x. > -- Will our old 5.0 databases be "broken"? > I'm sure our 4GL's will need to be (at least) recompiled. Your best bet is to search through the archives of the comp.databases.informix newsgroup for other people's war stories. (Use dejanews, at their web site http://www.dejanews.com ) or the IIUG site. Then read the Informix Migration Guide (available in Adobe Acrobat reader format from the Informix web site if you have a support contract and have enrolled in the TechInfo program.) Then see about taking the class Informix offers on upgrading from 5-7.
