Progress does this - enables you to specify the index to use in a query. Guess what happens when (NOT if) some bright DBA changes the name of the index? Better to use EXPLAIN and tune your indexes. I'm very grateful this feature ISN'T in Informix; it's caused me a lot of grief. I now have the schema locked exclusive to me only :). Peter Wiley
