You may investigate the data "cleaning" tools, designed for warehousing,
such as verity and vality (I think). They'll give you a report of the different
types of data that you think are all one type (such as the 11 different values
one guy found in the SEX column) and offer some way to clean them up,
too. These companies specialize in data migration.
Of course, I have no connections with any of them, it's just something
you should check into.
