You should try to use ontape -c. It runs as a daemon and cuts in as required
to back up full logs. ontape -a ("automatic") is something of a misnomer.
It's difficult to think of any ways in which it might be described as
"automatic". It's just a one-off dump of all logs that full and available
to be backed up, and must be invoked manually. It follows that ontape -a
overwrites the destination tape every time it is invoked.

logical logs are full, the database engine will allow no further update
activity on the database server until the situation is resolved. In the
case of an archive, no system tables can be updated by the archive process.
Were you given any Informix manuals with your installation? As manuals go,
they really are very good.
