Paula Hawthorne (Informix's Tools Head Person) says that 4GL is no longer in maintenance-only mode, and is in fact going to be actively enhanced. That said, a number of Informix employees I spoke to at the conference said things like "Have you seen 4j's compiler? It's 4GL done properly". I also understand that the Informix-4GL source code is pretty dated. 4j's is a 100% compatible superset of Informix-4GL, capable of running on Windows NT as a server, and Win95/NT/3.1/Dumb Terminals as a front end (like 4GL/GX, but better). Upcoming releases will include OO enhancements and the ability to use a Web browser as the interface to 4GL. It looks to me like this may well be 4GL's best chance at a future. Cavaet: I haven't used 4j's compiler yet.
