} Hello Richard,
} the only way is to export your database with dbexport. You can export it to
} disk (if there is enough space) or to tape.
}
} Remeber: dbimport will set the lock level of your tables to page. if you have
} row locking, you have to alter the tables!
}
} You cannot copy your raw devices (e. g. dd) cause informix stores chunk and
} other information in the first few (I remember 12) pages. These pages will be
} used when informix initialize.

H-Richard,
In addition to lock-level as mentioned by VFraenkle, dbimport will mess-up your
extend sizes, which could affect the performance adn as I always mentioned it
could get you into lonmg transaction problem. In addition to all this if you have
GBs of data you will need that much disk space !!!.
So for data migration I use & will recommend, use of named pipes with unload &
compress, this and properly parsed dbschema will be more than enough for
migration. In which case no change of lock mode or extend sizes and no worry
about long transaction. You will have to use dbload for importing the data and
the schema file to create the database. We get this whole thing done in two
script files, one for exporting and another one for importing. Intermediate
transfer files will be compress to 1/5 to 1/7 thus requiring only 2 GB of space
for a 10 GB database, you can even use your tape device if you dont have enough
disk space.
