We ran into this on two AIX 4.3 servers. When we removed DNS from the server everything worked fine. Like your situation, it just started happening - DNS had been defined on the box for a long time. Since nothing on the servers had changed we assumed something had happened within the network, but our network folks wouldn't fess up to any changes.
