Know how big your tables are likely to be and set your initial and next extent sizes when you first build the database. If you can put the busiest tables on different physical disks. Get the log files out of the rootdbs into a quiet corner. Don't put tables in the rootdbs.....The Informix Administrators manual has all this and more and should be required reading :-)
