RE: ANSI mode DB's and DBIMPORT
Posted in 1999
I'll put in my two-cents worth on ANSI and dbexport/dbimport.
The way Informix works with an ANSI database is that you can change the
logging mode TO ANSI, but once changed you cannot change it back.
The way that I know to address FP's issue is this:
Use dbimport with no logging to get the database loaded.
Set TAPEDEV to /dev/null.
Use ontape -s -ANSI dbname to change the logging mode to ANSI.
Set TAPEDEV back to your 'normal' setting.
This completely avoids the problem with logs filling up during your import.
In their best incarnation, ANSI databases are a pain in the rear.
This gets multiplied if you have mixed ownership of the database objects --
You can never get a clean 100% accurate dbschema.

I have a DB that runs in ANSI mode. When you do a dbimport -ansi your
logical
logs will fill at a rapid rate. What I do before doing the dbimport is set
my
logical log tape device to /dev/null and bounce Informix or set my logical
log
tape device to /dev/null and run ontape -a every once in a while durring the
dbimport.

I don't think you will find many people with ANSI MODE experience (watch
them flood in NOW! :). They are just more trouble than they are worth.
It is possible that they use more log space, but I would check with
Informix regarding known problems.
Certainly loading with no logging and switching on after the load is the
preferred method.
