Werner, according to the Informix manuals, the logging mode of both databases must be the same, i.e. both no logging, or both with logging, or both mode ansi. Since the logging mode for ANSI databases is always unbuffered logging, have you tried setting the other database to "plain" unbuffered logging? Maybe this will work? I haven't tried this myself.
