Informix Users

I want to know about Informix Users. I created informix OS-user & group. It is used for Informix installation. So Informix is an Administrative user for all instances.. right..?? In oracle, SYS, SYSTEM..etc users will be created as part of Oracle installation. Similarly, How do i find which users are created as part of Informix installation..? If i want to create a new user, how to do that..?? Please point me a link discussing about informix users. Thanks in Advance Saravanan
Helo, in my opinion, you only have the informix user and group. What we already have done in the past (in clustered environments, running several instances) is that we created additional users such as informix1, informix2, informix3, being sure they had the same UID and GID of the user informix, but with different homedirectories, where we put a .profile with the variables INFORMIXSERVER, INFORMIXDIR and ONCONFIG to have the correct environment. PS : this was on Solaris systems Jacques -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of SARAVANAN AJ Sent: Wednesday, December 17, 2008 2:00 PM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: Informix Users [14347] I want to know about Informix Users. Hi, Informix does not have DBMS users the way that Oracle does. Any OS user is an Informix user. Any user you want to be able to use Informix must have an OS userid. So you create new Informix users by creating OS users. Very simple. Users in Informix are very simple. There isn't such a concept per se. Any valid operating system user on the server is a valid Informix user. Within any particular database that user may or may not have priveleges to connect to the database or to view or manipulate specific objects within it. Those priveleges are controlled with the GRANT and REVOKE commands. By default all users have priveleges on all objects in every database because there is one pseudo user, 'public', which has all priveleges not revoked from it. In any production database you should revoke connect and all other priveleges from user public as a matter of course and grant priveleges to individual users directly or be creating various priveleged roles and assigning those roles to users as required. The user 'informix' is the superuser, akin to the UNIX concept of user 'root', with priveleges to all databases and all objects within them. You can also create other DBSA users (and other priveleged user classes) besides informix with more limited powers so that the superuser password need not be propagated.
