How to remove hard returns in blobs

Need to output the data from a blob in a format that will fit into Excel - but as users have added returns, it messes Excel up and puts data on the next line. How to remove the hard returns? Replace won't work on blobs - tried copying data into a new table with column type of 'text' but no luck. Informix 7.31
