ODS 7.23 on HP-UX - SYSTEM HANG - URGENT

We are running 3 ODS 7.23 instance on an HP-UX 10.20 2-processor system and recently we are getting system hangs. The load average shoots up inexorably whilst the CPU idle times show > 90%! No processes are showing a CPU usage figure of > 1.5% and none of these processes is one of the oninits. No access to any of the onstats is available - they lock up as soon as started, i.e. no response and can not be killed with -9 or -15. Unix jobs such as ps, vi etc run quite happilly but 'glance' exhibits the same behaviour as the onstats. NB we can't kill the instances with onmode -ky either, or even kills from root. HELP it's driving us insane here!
