As I read this, there are no less than five posts in c.d.i. where the problems the post describes are precisely the problems Universal Servers address. For example, questions of case sensitivity, non-SQL collation sequences (sorting) and creating schemas for odd data structures. The report that pegged Universal Servers as a late 1990's phenomenon failed to grasp the true utility of an extensible database. The authors assumed -- as do so many of the analysts -- that extensibility = rich media; text, images, video etc. Certainly the mass market for this kind of stuff isn't there yet, although there is a signifigant amount of revenue to be had at the high end. For an alternative view, check out the recent Ovum report; http://www.ovum.com/evaluate/oed/index.html They basicly spend half the paper blasting the DBMS vendors -- Informix in particular -- for failing to explain what an ORDBMS really is.
